Traineeship Application Process

NIH Funded Traineeship Eligibility

Members of the BTP entering the 2nd year of their Ph.D. studies may apply for an NIH two-year traineeship. In exceptional cases, BTP students entering their 3rd year may apply for a one-year NIH traineeship. Students must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents working in the lab of a BTP faculty member to apply. Traineeships will start the Fall Semester after selection and conclude after four semesters.

UMass-Supported Traineeship Eligibility

All members of the BTP entering the 2nd year or 3rd of their Ph.D. who work in the lab of a BTP faculty member may apply for UMass-supported traineeships. Domestic and international students are welcome to apply. UMass Traineeships will support students in the spring semester for two consecutive years.

Application & Deadline

The next application deadline is June 3rd, 2024. Complete the application below, and submit with the other required files as a single .pdf.

  • Student Application for BTP Traineeship. *Please note that this form is editable with Microsoft Word. Please download and save to your computer to enable editing.
  • Transcripts: Undergraduate and Graduate (unofficial transcripts are acceptable)
  • One-page summary of research, emphasizing relevance to biotechnology and interdisciplinary collaboration.
  • Two letters of support are also required and should be emailed directly from the letter writer to BTP
    • One nomination letter from sponsoring BTP faculty/advisor.
    • A second letter of recommendation from a UMass faculty member who knows the candidate well.

What’s next?

BTP will reach out to the applicant informing them if they had made it to the interview phase. If selected,  interviews for selected applicants will be held in June. We will email candidates their interview time slot for their presentation time. Candidates are asked to ensure that their availability during this timeframe.

Prepare for your interview! 

  1. Applicants will be presenting in front of a five-member BTP executive committee in person.
  2. We ask that you prepare a 5 MINUTE talk for your interview. We will use a timer and you will be asked to stop talking at the 5 minute mark. There will also be time for 3-4 minutes of questions from the committee.
    1. The talk should describe your research project and emphasize the connection of your project to Biotechnology. In addition, please address how an industrial internship, which is a requirement for all BTP fellows, will positively influence your graduate training or your research progress. Please highlight ways that you and your lab have been involved in the BTP to date.
    2. You are allowed to use 1-3 slides during your 5-minute talk. No more than three slides will be allowed.
